BATHING

Perform a sponge bath until the newborns umbilical cord and circumcision is healed. Here are the steps for performing a newborn bath. Remember to keep your baby warm throughout the entire bath.  Also, always ensure the water is luke warm, not hot.

  • Put warm water in your baby tub
  • Place infant on a warm surface
  • Start with the infant’s eyes-do not use soap in the eyes
  • Wipe the eye from the inner eye to the outer eye
  • Use a different portion of the washcloth to do the other eye the same way
  • Wash the rest of the face down with water only
  • Use baby shampoo on the newborns head, rinse with warm water (hold the infant in the football hold over the tub while washing the head)
  • Wash one section of the infant at a time (upper body) and pat dry
  • Keep umbilical cord dry
  • Wash, rinse and pat dry the lower body

**Clean female’s genitalia by washing from front to back. Rinse and pat dry.
**Clean male’s genitalia by washing the penis and scrotum. Rinse and pat dry.

Notify your provider if:
A yellow or green discharge is noted in your baby’s eyes.
