How To Encourage A Sleepy Baby To Nurse

If the baby is sleepy and not feeding frequently (8-12 times in 24 hours) try some of the following tips:

  • Try to awaken the baby by undressing to a diaper if the room is warm. Sometimes just putting them on a changing surface in a diaper only for a short time will awaken them.
  • Talk to the baby
  • Put them skin to skin and breast feed that way.
  • Give them a massage and open up the diaper. Gently rub their feet, hand and stroke their back
  • Gently stroke their lips and put some breast milk onto the baby’s lips
  • Switch to the other side as soon as the baby looses interest. Do this several times
  • Burp in between offering side one and side two.
  • Do a diaper change between sides.

Good latch on in combination with breast compression can help keep a sleepy baby active at the breast.  (See Dr. Jack Newman’s website under breast compression)
